Alan Pettibone said… - Thank you for the welcome! We recently moved to Missoula from Albuquerque, NM where we had a small urban veggie garden that was mostly native and dry weather tolerant plants. I had great success with "the three sisters" (groupings of indigenous varieties of corn, beans, and squash planted together), herbs (rosemary, cilantro, oregano, etc.), southwestern heirloom tomatoes, and onions and garlic. I called it my salsa garden. I am looking forward to establishing a new small garden with regionally appropriate offerings here in MT. Any suggestions? Thanks!

A lot of the "hot stuff" didn't thrive and the cold stuff is bolting or petering off. I did FINALLY post some photos from July. Been out of town almost every weekend so in slight neglect. Time for fall planting. I'll be heading out for a wedding today and probably not back til late Sunday. Not sure what you need it for but let me know if you want to come over or I could take some shots too.

- Thanks! I have about half of a new bed yet to plant, and I haven't been able to figure out what to do. I think I may try to get a purple heirloom tomato that I heard was good. After I wrote last week, I woke up one morning to find my windshield totally frozen over. I was worried about my tender stuff, but the hoophouse and walls-o-water protected them. My tomatoes, tomatillos and spaghetti squash have grown noticeably over the past couple weeks, my snow peas have started climbing their trellis a couple days ago, and my potatoes have started coming up. My strawberries are blooming well, my carrots have managed to make it out of the ground, I've got mustard and beets coming up in a few beds, the kale is a couple inches high, and my raspberries flooded for a day during the past storm. I love this time of the year, despite the rain.

By the numbers: By the numbers: A morning head-count set our numbers at 18 volunteers, 3 trucks, 2 cars, and 17 shovels. Altogether this helped us haul 5 truckloads from a Belgrade sheep farm to a drop-off site on the Northside of Bozeman that new gardeners can access!
By the mood: I must say, this hauling was by far the most well-attended and, surprisingly, smooth event we've ever organized. Volunteers were patient with any…
