The Seedlucks Chili Has Been Eaten--Now It's Time To Grow Beans All Our Own

Posted on March 31, 2011 at 6:51pm 0 Comments

This year's Seed Ordering/Exchanging Potluck--more than the previous 2 events--opened me up to the real need to celebrate this valley's gardeners more often.  There was a great diversity of age . . . from some rad MSU students on up to post-graduates who are workin' the Montana Conservation thing and a few experienced, yet humble, gardeners who would make up the "elder" demographic.

You say 'A weed is a weed!' But I know it's not! (and other ponderings)

Frankly, it doesn't take hail or tender rain for an answer. My garden lives. I'd like to think it's because I've vetted the plants through uncommon practices--but they've probably just survived from the good breeding methods of Judy Fisher of Fisher Seeds (and the wild nature that still exists in them). If these organisms can survive the hands of this beginning organic farmer, they're strong enough to grow alongside anybody with a keen interest in the homegrown.

I find myself…

Hi,

I could be interested in some manure-ing this Saturday. Keep me posted!

Kale seeds would also be awesome, as would getting some of that manurey compost for myself.

Also: what is 1000K New Gardens up to on earth-day Saturday? If you don't have any plans, you should have a booth at the Sustainability Fair following Clean-Up Day. Unload some of those oodles of seeds y'all had at the chili cook-off (yum!). Should be a good host of community groups there, and a good opportunity to involve more community members in your organization. Shoot me an email at ebaker@bozeman.net if you want to participate in the fair.

Best,

Emily

Hello Maximillion,

I am replying to your message on my wall. I am Jami. Hello! I am new to all the gardening. At least for me. We started to rototill up the prospective garden spot. We were going to use raised beds due to rock onthe other side of our property but we dug and found that their was not as many rocks on the garden side of the property. I am looking for free pallets to construct our compost piles. I have been searching every where to buy truck loads of manure and compost just to get us started. I planted to raspberry rootstock , so should be interesting to see what happens. And I have tons more berry plants coming in the next month or so. I would love a mentor master gardner, I am in Belgrade off the frontage road on about 500 acres of hay fields(leased out for hay) but we have about 5 acres and have goats for milk and cheese, lambs, ponies and horses and pig's and unknown amount of chickens. The kids found rhubarb plants growing by the house, and we are super excited. As far as my knowledge I am an accidental gardner but we are doing everything to raise our own food and storing as much as we can. If you could guide me on manuer and compost and where to get it, that would be appreciated! Thanks in advance

Hey Max,

We want to do small plots at several prime locations on the property - for a total of 150-200 square feet. Whatever portion of that y'all can help us with will be great. We're looking for some newspapers, grass clippings, etc., to augment the leaves and other stuff you will bring, and if all goes well we should be able to compile a decent amount of materials by next weekend.

Since we're renting - and for not necessarily a number of years - we're probably not the best candidate for the neat greenhouse; I hope you find a good home for it. At most, we may experiment with floating row cover.

I'll look here on the site for info on volunteering this weekend with whatever activities are happening. Or else, send me some info.

Max,

Either Oct 15 or 16 would be okay for us, I think. (We'll work with whatever day is still available.) In the meantime, we're looking for some layering materials. Curbside scrounging, mostly (not sure how else we can snag free stuff - although buying something is not off the table). All we have is kitchen scraps we've been throwing in one corner of the yard for weeks now, where we think we'll create a small-ish plot. There's been some talk here of building a small greenhouse, but I don't know if that will get off the ground, or even where it would be sited on the property.

Also, I can offer at least my own services to a dig day before our day. I may be able to get one or more housemates to come as well. Just need deets.
